Agave Studio DEsigns & Develops a new Squarespace website for a Maryland Tourist Railroad

The Denver Squarespace Designers & Developers just launched a site jam packed with features for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

Railroads hold a special place in our heart here at Agave Studio, and lately we’ve gotten to work on quite a bit of rail-themed projects. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad came to us with a need to upgrade their site from a Wordpress site. The Wordpress site had many of the problems our former Wordpress clients run into: out-of-date, difficult to keep updated, and just overall in need of a refresh. The Squarespace design team at Agave Studio knew exactly what to do and created a beautiful new website for the railroad in Squarespace 7.1. With the new Fluid Engine, no pun intended, the Denver Squarespace experts were able to give the railroad beautiful full width images, videos, overlapping elements and new pages to fill the needs of a large tourist operation. Check out how we did it below!

The Brief

The Executive Director from the Western Maryland Scenic came to us after seeing our work with the South Park Rail Society and decided it was time for the clunky Wordpress site to get an upgrade. The web design team at Agave Studio concurred and we got to work on how to best move the site from Wordpress to Squarespace. The Western Maryland needed to maintain its booking abilities through the platform they work with, consideration number one. Consideration number two was the railroad had a mountain thunder worth of new images and content to update their site with. This included the need for a new donation functionality through DonorBox and the need for a new online store to sell products. Luckily, the Squarespace experts at Agave knew how to get everything on track.

The Process

To start building out the new Squarespace site for the railroad, the designers and developers at Agave created a wireframe to map out all the new pages the railroad needed. One major addition over the old site was the addition of pages for the railroad’s steam and diesel locomotives. Agave Studio cleverly used the new Squarespace portfolio pages to make a locomotive landing page, and then allow for each locomotive to have its own dedicated page. This ensured potential riders could find information easily on the locomotives pulling their passenger train. Agave then set up pages for riders to book their next train ride. These pages had to feature an integration with the railroad’s booking platform, which didn’t look the best unfortunately. Agave decided the best course of action would be to have the booking platform “pop up” when a button was clicked. We achieved this with a pop-up plugin from SQSP Themes, which ended up being the perfect solution.

After moving over and updating content, Agave worked with the railroad to get eye-catching images and videos to elevate the site and show off the historical operations at the railroad.

The REsult

The result is a beautiful new Squarespace website for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The numerous calls-to-action on the site direct potential riders to the excursion they are interested in or to the train schedule page. The pages about the railroad are informative and show off the hard work that the employees and volunteers of the railroad put in every day. The new Squarespace site features large, high-quality images to inspire potential riders to book their next excursion and visit the railroad.

Agave couldn’t be more proud to have been able to work on this site for the Western Maryland.

All aboard!
